No Bond For Terrell Murder Spree Suspect
TERRELL (CBSDFW.COM) - Residents in Terrell are still coming to grips with a deadly shooting spree that took place on Monday night. Police said that when Charles Brownlow Jr. was finished, five people were dead including the suspect's mother and aunt. But authorities are trying to determine why this all happened.
Police have hunkered down for a lengthy and thorough investigation. Brownlow has been charged with murder and evading arrest, and he is expected to face additional charges. He was arraigned on Wednesday morning and will not be getting out of jail anytime soon. The judge has allowed no bond on both charges.
Those who know Brownlow -- like his brother, Terrence Walker -- said that he was using a lot of drugs in recent weeks. "I don't think there's enough drugs in the world that could make me do that," Walker said. "I can't use drugs as an excuse."
Brownlow was moved just before midnight on Tuesday. CBS 11 News was the only television station at the scene when authorities brought the suspect from the Terrell Police Department jail to the Terrell Community Senior Center, about one block away. A police officer said that detectives with the criminal investigation were set up in that building.
The suspect spent only a matter of minutes inside of the community center before being transferred back to jail. Officials have not said why the man was moved. Brownlow was then transferred to the Kaufman County Jail on Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, the Terrell community leaned on each other for support on Tuesday evening. A memorial for the victims has been set up at the Ali's Market convenience store -- one of the crime scenes -- and it is growing by the hour. Those attending a vigil there cried and prayed, and tried to understand why all of this violence happened.
Luis Leal-Carillo was a clerk at the store. The 22-year-old father leaves behind a 1-year-old son and a fiancé. "My heart is broken," said store owner Ali Karimi. "My heart is broke for that young man. I loved him."
The series of murders started around 5:00 p.m. on Monday evening, when police found Brownlow's aunt, 55-year-old Belinda Walker, shot to death in her home. A firefighter heading to the scene spotted Brownlow's home on fire several blocks away, and that is where authorities discovered the body of the suspect's mother, 61-year-old Mary Brownlow. Police believe that Brownlow shot his mom and set the home on fire.
Police later found two of Brownlow's acquaintances -- 30-year-old Jason Wooden and 30-year-old Kelleye Sluder -- also shot to death inside of their home on Eulalia Drive. The couple's 3-year-old child was safe in bed.
According to an arrest warrant, the toddler told officers that a guy came in a shot his mom and dad. Inside the home, officers could see spent casings, projectiles and live ammunition lying on the floor of the garage and other parts of the house. They also saw blood droplets leading from the kitchen area to the rear portion of the house where the two victims were found deceased, according to the warrant.
"It's not fair," said a friend of the victims. "They didn't deserve it."
Just minutes after that discovery, an off-duty police officer spotted Brownlow at Ali's Market, where Leal-Carillo was shot and killed. Officials chased and arrested the man. Police said that the 36-year-old suspect appeared to be intoxicated or on drugs at the time that he was taken into custody.
