Tense Moments For Keller Family Waiting On News From Boston
KELLER (CBSDFW.COM) - He just ran a personal best, two-hours twenty nine minutes, but instead of celebrating his 68th-place finish at the Boston Marathon, Jared McNeil of Fort Worth found himself an unimaginable situation.
"It's not anything that you expect when you go to a race that's for sure," said McNeil over the phone to CBS 11.
McNeil had crossed the finish line more than an hour before the explosions but had stay in the area to celebrate with his fellow Texas runners.
McNeil said with the subways suspended and many roads blocked, it took him hours to leave the chaotic scene and return to his hotel.
Meanwhile his parents in Keller frantically called their son when they heard the news. With heavy traffic following the explosions it took nearly four hours before McNeil's father reached his son by phone.
"I finally got to speak to him and hear his voice," said David McNeil from his Keller home. "That's a beautiful thing."
McNeil said in the hours before talking with his son he couldn't help but think of what might have happened.
"You start hearing body parts going here, body parts going there. You just don't know and your mind runs the gamut," he said.
McNeil was one of more than two-hundred runners from North Texas who ran in Monday's marathon. McNeil was the top finisher from Texas.
