Television Manager In DFW Touts Education As Key To Success
Ken Foote, director of programming for CBS Television Stations in Dallas/Fort Worth, talks about the value of education. Foote believes a chosen educational route directly affects professional success. His advice for people starting their careers, or seeking a change in careers, is to consider an educational path first, then stay positive.
Tell us about your role within television. It sounds exciting. What exactly do you do?
"I am the director of programming for CBS Television Stations of Dallas/Fort Worth, which include KTVT CBS11 and KTXA Channel 21 'TXA21.' My job is to make sure that the CBS Television Network airs as it is supposed to in our market, as well as our local, syndicated and sports programming, and that these programs are in time periods that maximize audience reach."
What kind of education or degree is required for this position?
"A bachelor's degree is required for my position. I have a bachelor of fine arts -- BFA -- degree in radio/TV/film from Southern Methodist University and a master of business administration -- MBA -- degree from The University of Texas at Austin. It took six years to complete this. I chose SMU of Texas because of its outstanding reputation in my fields of interest."
How has your education contributed to your professional success?
"The MBA program at Texas ended up being a great preparation for my career, even though most MBA programs train their students for staff positions, not operating positions like my job. My advice is to start making as many contacts within the business as possible and do as many internships as possible. Attitude is everything. When you start your career, do whatever tasks your supervisor asks you to do. Believe me, you will get noticed!"
