13-Year-Old Boy Shot And Killed In Crossfire In Dallas' Pleasant Grove Area
21-Year-Old Datrail Clayton Arrested In Deadly Shooting Of Dallas 13-Year-Old Malik Tyler
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A 13-year-old boy was shot and killed off Bruton Road in the Pleasant Grove area Tuesday around 7:00 p.m.
Dallas Police initially identified the child as age 14, but the Dallas County Medical Examiner early Wednesday identified him as Malik Tyler, age 13.
Police said the boy was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of other people shooting at each other from two vehicles on Bruton Road at St. Augustine Drive.
"We are very, very angry about the level of violence we are seeing in our city," said Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall. "We've lost one of our youth to violence that is not necessary in our city."
The chief said the 13-year-old was in no way involved in any illegal activities.
Police are actively looking for a silver Chrysler 300 and are calling on the community to help by providing tips to police.
This area is notorious for gang members, drug dealers, fights and shootings.
Over the years, the City of Dallas has tried to curb the crime in the area that often takes place in the parking lots of the convenience store and the self-service car wash that are located on the busy street corner.
The Dallas Police Department targeted the area with automatic license plate readers and installed a surveillance camera on a street light. The city also denied the Adams Food Mart convenience store a permit to sell wine and beer.
Neighbors, however, said these efforts have done little to make the corner safer.
Tuesday night's deadly shooting is the fourth homicide in Dallas in June after an unusually high 41 homicides in May.
