Teen Was Driving Truck That Killed Two North Texas Women
LIMON, COLO (CBSDFW.COM & AP) - Authorities say a teenager was driving a tractor-trailer that struck and killed two North Texas women who were changing a tire on Interstate 70 near Limon, Colorado.
Sergeant Mike Baker with the Colorado State Patrol says a 16-year-old boy was driving a truck which was towing a loaded horse trailer at the time of the accident. 37-year-old Michel Martin of Sulphur, Louisiana was a passenger in the truck.
Baker says the teen left the scene of the accident before troopers could arrive. Martin told authorities he had been driving the vehicle, but investigators later determined it was Martin's 16-year-old son who was behind the wheel.
Investigators say a vehicle trailing 10 miles behind the truck picked up the teenager minutes after the accident and drove him to Wyoming. The teen later turned himself in.
However, the driver of the trailing vehicle was not charged because state troopers say he was unaware of the circumstances involving the accident.
Both Father and son have since been arrested. The 16-year-old is charged with two felony counts of leaving the scene of a deadly accident, as well as one misdemeanor count of careless driving causing death. Michel Martin faces one misdemeanor count of false reporting.
The truck struck the women at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday.
Killed in the crash were 48-year-old Shun Jones of Carrollton and 38-year-old Amanda Omo-Iyamu of Balch Springs.
