Teen Tapped To Sing At JFK 50th Commemoration
DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - A 19-year-old college student has been tapped to sing the national anthem at the JFK 50th Commemoration later this month in Dallas.
The thousands expected to watch the ceremony in person or on TV will see Dallas Baptist University student Monica Saldivar take the stage to pursue her passion and her purpose.
"My parents have said I was going to be a singer. God gave me a gift, and I'm proud to use it," said Saldivar.
Well-versed musically, thanks to her years at Dallas ISD's Booker T. Washington Arts Magnet, the Grand Prairie native's voice has garnered many admirers...including those who always request her rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner." On November 22, Saldivar will sing it for Dallas' dedication and commemoration of the life of President John Kennedy. Organizers wanted her specifically.
"For me, it's an honor to do it…to say hello and also goodbye to a President I looked up to as a kid growing up," said Saldivar. "My dad would tell us stories about things he did for us."
Saldivar says she is honored to have an opportunity to remember such a significant man on such a significant day.
