Fort Worth House Fire Leaves Teen Critically Hurt, Parents Injured
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A 13-year-old girl is alive today thanks to a police officer who rushed into a burning house to save her.
Police body-camera video captured her rescue from a burning house in Fort Worth Wednesday night.
Everman police Sgt. Jimmy Combs just happened to be near by when a fire broke out a house on Beacon Way in Fort Worth.
His body camera footage shows him arriving first, before firefighter arrived. Combs asks who is inside the house. Someone mistakenly tells him a baby is inside the house, and Combs begins running towards the house, while notifying dispatch.
"There's a baby trapped inside. I'm making entry," Combs said in the video.
A 13-year-old girl, not a baby, was trapped inside the house, unconscious in a bedroom. Her mother stood outside the bedroom window as Combs approached, her bloodcurdling screams for help filling the night air.
Combs broke through the window, and later took of some of his gear to get inside the house.
"There was a lot of smoke, a lot of heat," said Combs. "Police uniform is not built for that. Luckily, firefighters arrived. I was able to push him through the window. He brought her to the window and handed her over to me."
Sgt. Combs has minor burns on his wrists after the rescue.
"It's just what we do," said Combs. "I don't want to be a hero. That's not what I'm here for. It's just another day."
The 13-year old girl is at Parkland hospital in Dallas in the burn unit.
As for the house, the Fort Worth Fire Department hasn't determined the exact cause of the fire but does not suspect foul play.
