Teen Arrested For Deadly Shooting Of DART Bus Operator During Attempted Carjacking

LANCASTER, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) - A 16-year-old boy has been arrested for the deadly shooting of DART bus operator Larry Hearn, outside Hearn's home Tuesday morning.

Police are not identifying the juvenile at this time, but they said he confessed to Hearn's murder, even leading police to a field behind the house where he left the gun.

They said an anonymous tip on Wednesday, led them to the suspect.

Police said Hearn, 60, was shot and killed during an attempted carjacking.

Apparently, there was a physical struggle between Hearn and teen when the teen shot Hearn.

Hearn was working a spilt-shift and went home during a break when he was murdered in the 1300 block of Pennsylvania Avenue around 10:00 a.m.

"Basically, it was a car jacking gone wrong," said Hearn's nephew, Vernon Smith.

Hearn's other nephew, Charles Holloway, says he never imagined a teenager could be to blame.

"My heart instantly dropped because now I'm looking at it as two lives gone," said Holloway. "One, you took the life of my uncle who we will never see again, and then by you being 16-years-old, you never really got enjoy life."

"He actually turned himself in and confessed not only to killing my uncle but to some other robberies that had taken place in the city of Lancaster," said Smith.

When police arrived to the crime scene Tuesday, Hearn's car was still running, with his wallet and work bag still into the car.

Hearn's family says the teen's mother advised him to turn himself in Thursday.
