Ted Cruz Headlines Texas Town Hall Meeting Aimed At Ending Obamacare

story updated 9:35 p.m.

DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) -  Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, is among those leading the fight to defeat President Barack Obama's Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act or "Obamacare", as it's commonly called, by any means necessary.

Senator Cruz tells supporters and those who will listen, "This thing ain't working. And I'll tell you right now, the single biggest fight in Washington and I think the most important fight is the fight to defund Obamacare."

Senator Cruz is headlining a town hall meeting at the Hilton Anatole hotel in Dallas Tuesday night hosted by the conservative group, the Heritage Foundation.

But that's not the only town hall meeting on the health reform law in Dallas this week.

On Monday, Democratic Congressman Marc Veasey of Fort Worth joined Democratic Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson of Dallas to promote the law. Veasey says, "The law is going to be absolutely great for Americans."

They encouraged people to sign up for the health insurance exchanges the federal government is scheduled to set-up by October 1st so the uninsured can buy health coverage.

But questions remain over whether the law will really work after the Obama administration delayed a key provision requiring employers with more than 50 workers to provide health insurance for full-time employees.

That part will go into effect in January, 2015 instead of January, 2014.

Senator Cruz says he wants to repeal the law for good -- even if it means threatening to shut down the government.  While Mr. Cruz says he doesn't want the government to close, he says Republicans need to use the threat as leverage against the Democrats who supported it.  "The continuing resolution, which funds the federal government, expires September 30th. I publicly stated, along with a number of other Senators, under no circumstances will I vote for a continuing resolution that funds even one penny of Obamacare."

Mr. Cruz says he wants the Republican-led House of Representatives to approve a continuing resolution that funds the entire federal government except for the President's health law.

Congressman Veasey disagrees, "I think Senator Cruz is wasting taxpayers' dollars. I think Senator Cruz needs to work in a bipartisan manner with Democrats to make sure the law is fully implemented and that all Americans have affordable healthcare."

Not all Republicans agree with Senator Cruz's tactics saying there can be no single law can defund "Obamacare."

However, Republicans are united in their belief the law should be repealed.
