TCU To Discuss Allowing Guns On Campus

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The Horned Frogs are set to talk about the state's 'campus carry' controversy. TCU has not yet decided if students will be allowed to bring concealed weapons onto campus, but the Fort Worth university could make a decision soon.

Before making any calls, campus officials first plan to hear from students and staff members. This begins with a debate on the issue Thursday afternoon. Two other open forums will be held later this month to discuss the controversial topic. No decision is expected until after these meetings take place.

According to a new law, anyone who is licensed can carry a concealed handgun on public universities starting August 2016.

However, that law is different when it comes to private universities, like TCU. They are allowed to make their own decision on the issue, and can choose not to allow guns on campus.

Students seem to be split on the issue.

"I am all for the right to carry concealed weapons, but I don't believe that a college campus is a good place for that, with all the emotional instability and just the different types of people who can be in the wrong place at the wrong time," said student Alex Sborob. "I just think that it's a better place to be a safe place to study instead of having to worry about guns."

"I would feel safer because, obviously if they're registered, they're normally going to be safe users," explained freshman David Hansen. "I think everyone has a constitutional right to be able to carry a concealed handgun -- as long as they are responsible with it."

"I just wonder if that would create an unsafe environment, an air of unsafety," added junior Caylin Moore.

TCU senior Austin Flores suggested an alternative plan. "I would feel very uncomfortable with students having it," he said. "I would prefer like, faculty or the police to have them instead."
