TAX FREE TIPS (courtesy of Holly Quartaro, Galleria Dallas Fashion Stylist)
- MOST clothing and footwear under $100 will be tax-free
o Starts Friday, August 8 and runs through Sunday, August 10.
o You'll save about $8 for every $100 spent
o Of course the idea here is to save families some money on back-to-school purchases, but you do not have to be going back to school to take advantage of the sales tax offer.
- Some interesting points:
o Backpacks and messenger bags are included in the tax savings…but purses are not tax free…neither are briefcases or laptop cases
o Scarves will be tax free this weekend. But necklaces (another accessory worn around your neck) will still be taxed. Jewelry, sunglasses, hair accessories and watches will still be taxed.
o Belts are exempt from tax (but if you were to purchase only a belt buckle, it would be taxed). You will also be charged sales tax on other leather goods, like wallets.
o You won't pay tax on athletic shoes, but athletic-specific shoes like cleats are still taxed
o Other exemptions include school supplies, like paper, pencils and lunch boxes
- If any single item is over $100 you WILL pay the tax.
o Look for sales on merchandise right around that price point for great deals.
§ A great pair of designer jeans may be $120, but a lot of retailers will have them on sale this weekend for $99, meaning you get the sale price AND don't have to pay tax.
