Tasha's To Do List: July 16-19
KRLD -- If you're getting a little stir crazy this summer sitting at home, fear not, you have options! KRLD's Tasha Stevens brings you the best events happening in North Texas this weekend!
-- Check out the new penguin chick and save some money at the same time. Visit the Dallas Zoo Thursday for Dollar Day!
-- Another way to save some dough -- Free Third Thursday, at Trinity River Audubon Center.
-- Now this is what I am talking about. Free food for a great cause. Thursday night, July 16, Fox & Hound in Fort Worth is teaming up with Cowtown Cruisin' for a Cure to support those battling prostate cancer. The party will be from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. and you can chow down on tons of stuff including Olympian Hummus, Drunken Chicken Tenders, Tavern Wings, Slow Roasted Baby Back Ribs and so on.
-- We are nowhere near Halloween, but that doesn't mean we can't get freaked out at a Haunted House. This weekend (July 17-18), check out Dark Hour Haunted House in Plano and their Dog Days of Summer featuring The Beast Feast! Not only is this Dark Hour's final event before the Halloween season, but it is also a chance to "wolf down"…sorry… some awesome Barbecue from Ye Ole Butcher Shop of Plano.
-- If you are feeling like making a road trip, this place is perfect and it was just named a national monument a week ago. The Waco Mammoth Site was discovered in 1978. Since that time, 23 Columbian mammoths have been uncovered. The site was opened to the public in 2009, and before you ask...no, you won't get sweaty. The site features a state-of-the-art, climate-controlled dig shelter. They obviously knew you were coming.
-- If you need to lose some weight and need some major motivation, you might want to be at the 'Biggest Loser' Season 17 auditions when they come to Gilley's Dallas this Saturday. Teams of two who want to lose 80 pounds or more each can audition for the show if both people are at least 18 and a legal resident of the US. Whichever team wins get a cool $250,000.
-- Grammy Award-winning Imagine Dragons and their Smoke and Mirrors tour will play the AAC Friday night.
-- Nicki Minaj: The Pinkprint Tour is also playing Dallas on Friday night at Gexa.
-- If gaming is your thing, check out the SGC Gaming Convention Friday through Sunday at the Embassy Suites Frisco. It's a three day party where gamers from around the world can come together and share their passion for video games.
-- If you dig classic country -- as in the stuff that was on the radio in the early '90's and nobody has the good sense to play on the radio anymore -- don't miss Shenandoah/Marty Raborn and their Reloaded Tour at Arlington Music Hall Saturday night.
-- Get a dose of KISS this Saturday night at the Brick Tavern in Sachse with Rock and Roll Over.
-- Steely Dan/Elvis Costello playing Gexa this Sunday.
-- I always liked the fact that this place was located in an abandoned meat packing plant on top of Fort Worth's Hells Half Acre. Now I like it even more because of what they are doing this weekend. It appears that the zombies are running amok at Cutting Edge Haunted House in Fort Worth, so you and your friends will be sent on a mission to clear them out. Think Dawn of the Dead meets Rambo. Don't miss your chance to play some Zombie laser tag Friday through Sunday.
-- You may not be able to put a boat on your favorite lake this summer, but you can plan for it when the lakes re-open. Check out the DFW Summer Boat Show at Dallas Market Hall this weekend.
-- Kick off the weekend with a bang at Friday night's Grapevine Summer Blast Friday Fireworks. Designated viewing areas include the parking garage rooftop of Gaylord Texan Resort. Guests can also view the show at the Grapevine Mills parking areas.
-- This band is best known for their tune "Mother," but you can hear much more of their stuff Friday night at Southside Ballroom. Enjoy the vocal music stylings of Danzig.
-- I've always liked this country singer for many reasons. In high school, he was part of a gospel singing group. He's a big fan of '80's rock, saying the best rock ever made was between 1975 and 1985. He is smart…he earned a degree in Petroleum Engineering at Louisiana Tech. He has long hair, is 6'6" and he can actually dance. See Trace Adkins Saturday night at Billy Bob's.
-- See Texas own rockers "Kings X" at Trees on Friday.
-- The Texas Heritage Festival is happening this Saturday at the Heard Natural Science Museum and is a chance for you to celebrate all things Texas. They'll have western music, local artisans and you can even explore the Native Texas Butterfly Garden.
-- Lots to do at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth this Saturday as part of Kimbell Fest: Scotland. Of course they will have bagpipes and drums but they will also have concerts on the lawn with Whiskey Folk Ramblers among others and face painting. I am thinking a William Wallace, blue face theme.
-- Everybody is talking about Pluto, but don't forget to celebrate something a little closer to home. This Saturday at the Frontiers of Flight Museum is Moon Day, a celebration of the American space exploration program and the 46th anniversary of the lunar landing, which took place when Apollo 11 touched down on the moon's surface on July 20, 1969. The first 200 kids to arrive at the museum will each receive a Lunar Sample Bag stuffed with 5 pounds of space-related goodies.
-- It's a big ole' Food Truck Frenzy at Fair Park Friday.
-- This is truly a Christmas in July event. The Christmas Expo Thursday through Saturday at the Will Rogers Memorial Center will have people on hand to teach you how to light up your house in true Clark Griswold fashion. If it has long been your dream to have your house be visible from the moon, this is for you. This event is for all skill levels, whether you are a beginner or have been decorating for years.
