Nursing Student Killed In Drunk Driving Crash

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS)-- A Tarrant County Sheriff's Department civilian employee remains in jail, charged with intoxication manslaughter after the death of a North Texas student who was driving home from the movies with a friend.

Police say Alan Michael McKinney, 29, was intoxicated when he struck the vehicle of Amy Anders, 23, along the 5900 block of Sandshell Drive in Fort Worth.

Anders was killed instantly. Her passenger, a 21-year-old man, remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Anders was studying to be a nurse and was going to graduate in one year.

"She's a good kid, worked hard," said her father Randy Anders. "You couldn't ask for a better kid. A parent couldn't want a better kid, you know?"

McKinney worked in the Courtesy Patrol for the Tarrant County Sheriff's Department.

"This gentleman does not carry a gun. He is not sworn as a State of Texas Peace Officer. He does not do any enforcement action," said Terry Grisham, a spokesman for the Tarrant County Sheriff's Department.

He had been a civilian employee since February of 2006. He has since been suspended.

Meanwhile, the Anders family is devastated over the loss of their eldest daughter, who was a doting sister to her younger brother and sister.

"I thought losing my mom was hard but losing a kid, there's just nothing to describe that, you know," said Randy Anders. "That's what love is about, your kids."

Anders will be laid to rest Thursday.
