Tarrant Area Food Bank Breaks Ground On New Facility
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Work is now underway to bring a new resource to the fight against hunger in North Texas.
Construction has started on a much-needed warehouse for the Tarrant Area Food Bank, and there are plans to move the offices into a new space.
While the agency place has been helping feed the hungry since 1989, the demand has grown and so has the organization.
The Tarrant Area Food Bank assists people in 13 different counties and more than a third of the people they feed are children.
The organization needs to raise $12 million to pay for upgrades to the warehouse. Climate control will be added to keep fewer foods from spoiling and improvements will be made to the food drop area so items can come in and go out quicker.
The money will also pay for a new office across the street that will house the main offices.
"The main element here is that we are girding for the future, so we won't be caught short, and that's important. I don't see the population slowing down. I see it continuing to increase," said Tarrant Area Food Bank Executive Director Bo Soderbergh.
Soderbergh also said while the organization can serve more people, it's still an ongoing challenge when it comes to fighting hunger.
