Suspects In Fatal Hit & Run Captured In Florida
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Two men in custody for the April 15 hit-and-run crash that killed 13-year-old Ethan Vasquez.
The suspects, Dagoberto Castañon and Rogelio Avila, were caught in Fort Myers, Florida. U.S. Marshals found the two men in a trailer park.
Dallas police had named 26-year-old Castañon as a person of interest on April 17.
Investigators believe both Castañon and 24-year-old Avila were in the van that fled from police in Highland Park and crashed into the car carrying Ethan Vazquez and his mother, Sandy. Sandy remains in ICU at a Dallas hospital, but her husband said he is expecting her condition to be upgraded soon.
Investigators say they found burglary tools, an assault rifle, and a cell phone in the abandoned van.
According to police, the phone found at the crash scene traced back to Castañon's girlfriend. When police spoke with the woman she said her boyfriend told her that he and Avila had crashed a stolen van and when she saw him he had cuts on his head. A police affidavit further stated that the girlfriend said Castañon told her he wasn't sure if the people he crashed into survived.
The woman also said Castañon told her not to call his cell phone because it was lost. After the crash, the woman admitted to driving Castañon to Avila's house and dropping him off.
Castañon later asked his girlfriend to go to Mexico with him, but she refused.
Both of the suspects are being held in the Lee County Sheriff's Jail in Florida. The men are both charged with Murder and each being held on $500,000 bond.
Officials with Dallas police will work on extraditing the men back to Texas at some point next week.
