Veteran Officer's Son Killed By Suspected Drunken Driver
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - One man is dead and a woman seriously injured after a suspected drunk driver slammed into their vehicle in southern Dallas just before midnight.
According to Dallas police, 25-year-old Jeremy Price died after a driver ran a red light in the 1700 block of Corinth Street, near Ervay, and crashed into the Chrysler PT Cruiser he was driving.
Price was critically wounded in the crash and died several hours later at parkland Hospital. Inside the vehicle with him were an adult woman and a 7-month-old baby boy.
The female passenger was also taken to Parkland Hospital and remained in critical condition Thursday morning. The baby boy, who was buckled in a child safety seat at the time of the crash, is in good condition and received only minor injuries.
Police believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash and arrested driver Mathew Moore at the scene. The 26-year-old is charged with Intoxication Manslaughter and Intoxication Assault.
The tragedy is hitting close to home for Dallas police. The victim, Price, is the son of a veteran Dallas police officer.
Officer Patty Carter told CBS 11 today that Price was a "wonderful young man" who never caused any trouble. She says the fit, athletic 25-year-old loved running track, his family, and absolutely doted on his 7-year-old baby sister.
"She would always rather be with her big brother than a babysitter," says Carter. "He'd take her to get treats and a Slurpee after school."
"Our hearts are heavy today," said Dallas police Chief David Brown. It's such a devastating blow for our department and we're asking the city to pray for our officer, Officer Carter, and her family."
Family friends tell CBS 11 that the female friend injured in the crash is 5 months pregnant. She remains in critical condition.
A candlelight vigil for Price is planned for 8 p.m. at Mesquite's Poteet high school.
