DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A suspect was shot and a Dallas Sheriff's deputy was injured in South Dallas near Fair Park.

A six block radius was tape off with crime scene tape and deputies investigated what led up to the shooting.

Both the deputy and the suspect are expected to be okay, but now the big question is when sis the deputy open fire?

"When they told me I just went ooh‚ Lord Jesus," remembers Irene Hornsby. She received a call around 4:30 Wednesday afternoon and learned her cousin had been shot.

Deputies with the warrant squad tried to arrest her cousin on two felony warrants at a Church's Chicken, but the man took off in his car leading deputies on a short chase which ended at Copeland and Lagow streets.

According to Dallas Sheriff PIO, Melinda Urbana, "The car stopped and that's when they attempted to take him out of the car. The suspect was inside the car when he was shot."

The sheriff's office is investigating if the deputy fired his gun when the suspect reversed the car and ran over the deputy's foot‚ or if the car went into reverse after the gun went off.

"He was trying to get his car to go in reverse," says witness Quintina Moss who saw it happen. "He jumped out of his car and he took off running I didn't know where he was shot, but I knew they hit him."

The suspect ran down the block and deputies found him passed out on the ground from his injury.

The man is at Baylor Hospital, but is expected to be taken to jail later on those two felony warrants as well as assault on a public servant and evading arrest.
