Suspect Shot After Standoff With Dallas Police
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A man who held his family hostage was shot by police after he allegedly waved a gun at officers early Friday morning in northeast Dallas. The incident happened shortly after 3:00 a.m. at a house in the 3800 block of Casa Del Sol Lane.
When authorities arrived at the home, they found the suspect inside with a gun, holding his wife and kids hostage. Additional officers were called to the scene, and the man released his family unharmed about an hour later. But at that point, the suspect went outside into an alleyway in an attempt to escape. "He released the hostages, officers talked him into releasing the hostages," said Capt. Jack Bragg with the Dallas Police Department, "and then he left the residence in the rear and confronted the officers with a gun."
Officers shot the suspect once he started waving his gun in their direction.
"Seen the police cars, they had pulled out a shotgun and a riot shield, and we heard gunshots," said witness Samauri Sanders. "I'd say probably like six shots going back-to-back."
The suspect's condition is not known, but police did say that he is in surgery. Authorities have not said why the suspect was upset or what led to him taking his family hostage. No police officers were injured during the incident.
This is the 12th officer-involved shooting in Dallas this year, eight of which have been fatal. In four other cases, officers fired their weapons but did not strike anybody.
