Suspect Named In CFBISD Employee's Murder

CARROLLTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Police in Carrollton have identified a suspect in a murder case that rocked DFW on Thursday. The body of a Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District employee was found shot at a school district service building late Wednesday night. Now, investigators need help tracking down the man believed to be responsible for the slaying.

Todd Edward Fenton was a hard worker, holding jobs with both the CFBISD and a lawn equipment store. The 48-year-old had been with the school district for 16 years as the groundskeeping supervisor. But Fenton was discovered shot to death at the district's service center, where his office was located, on Wednesday night.

Those who knew the victim said that he was meticulous in the way that he took care of school property. "He helped provide a great look to all of our campuses," said school district spokeswoman Angela Shelley. "We are so sad. We appreciate the years that he gave to us."

Based on the evidence collected at the scene, police are now looking for 36-year-old Gerardo Rodriguez Alvarez, one of Fenton's co-workers. Officials believe that he is driving a beige Mercury Cougar with the Texas license plate DC5-J438.

According to the arrest warrant, Fenton was shot in the back several times. Detectives found six shell casings, four bullet fragments and one live round in or just ouside of the office where the victim was found.

Two school district employees reviewed surveillance camera footage with investigators, and immediately recognized Alvarez as the suspect in that video. The warrant also states that Alvarez had shown his gun to other workers. State records indicate that Alvarez has a concealed handgun license which expires in November.

The arrest warrant does not give any clues about what the suspect's motivation might have been.  Alvarez is described as 6'2," 190 lbs., with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen driving a 1997 Beige Mercury Cougar with Texas License Plate #DC5J438.  Anybody with information about Alvarez's whereabouts or any details about the crime is urged to contact the Carrollton Police Department immediately.
