SAGINAW (CBSDFW.COM) - Saginaw Police say two officers were assaulted overnight.

At least one of the officers shot the suspect, who was taken to a local hospital, but later died.

Police say it all started when an incoherent man was running up and down the street screaming.

An elderly couple stepped outside to see what all the commotion was about and that's when the man ran up to them and began assaulting them. He punched the husband in the face multiple times and beat the woman across her head so badly that she is hospitalized in the intensive care unit.

Police say the suspect then went to the house next door and kicked in the front door, scaring the residents inside, but he did not physically assault anyone before running back out the front door.

At this point, he continued running towards Old Decatur Rd. where he encountered the first responding officer.

As the officer got out of the car the suspect rushed him and began assaulting him.

Civilians stopped to help officer, but the suspect then turned to attack them, too.

Officer sustained serious injuries.

Two more officers arrived and attempted to get him controlled but the man was still struggling and attacking them.

One officer, fearing for life shot suspect an undetermined number of times, according to Saginaw Police.

Officers were taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons, and all have been discharged.

The officer who was most seriously hurt with a concussion will be in on medical leave for an undetermined time.

The other officer who shot and killed the suspect is on administrative leave pending investigation.

It hasn't been determined if the suspect was under the influence of a substance or if he had any mental issues.
