Suspect In Off-Duty Officer Involved Shooting Dies
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - During a press conference Monday morning Dallas police confirmed a man shot by an off-duty officer on Sunday morning is dead.
Police continue to investigate the incident that happened at a Taco Bell in the 4300 block of West Camp Wisdom Road around 10:00 a.m.
According to the police, off-duty officer Cortenay Howard had stopped at the restaurant to get something to eat. While there Howard noticed 18-year-old Kendrick Bernard McDaniel talking with friends, with a marijuana cigarette tucked behind his ear.
"Officer Howard asked suspect McDaniel to come talk to him at which point suspect McDaniel became belligerent and began cursing," Assistant Dallas Police Chief Cynthia Villarreal explained. "Because of the way suspect McDaniel was acting Officer Howard became suspicious, he drew his weapon, and again instructed suspect McDaniel to come talk to him."
McDaniel allegedly tried to run from the officer, but fell.
"As he fell he started to draw a black handgun from the from of his waistband. Fearing for his life, Officer Howard fired his weapon at suspect McDaniel," Villarreal said.
The teen, who was struck by at least one bullet, was taken to a nearby hospital but died Sunday night.
Officer Howard, who was in full uniform at the time of the incident, was not injured. The Dallas Police Department confirms he is a 10-year veteran of the force.
Police say they have not only surveillance video, but various witness accounts that confirm the chain of events. A handgun was also recovered at the scene.
Howard has been placed on routine administrative leave. The incident is Officer Howard's second shooting while off-duty shooting. In 2005, he shot at someone while trying to defend his home.
The restaurant shooting case is still under investigation. So far, no charges have been filed.
