Suspect In DeSoto Murder-Suicide Was Former Police Officer

DESOTO (CBS 11 NEWS) – Sources tell CBS 11 that Desoto Police are investigating the possibility that former police officer Andre Murphy did not kill himself after shooting his ex-wife.
Sources say detectives are exploring the possibility that Catina Murphy may have grabbed a gun and shot her ex-husband after he broke into her mother's home and fired at her last night.
Police hope an autopsy will answer that question.

DESOTO (CBSDFW.COM) - After documented cases of family violence, the finalization of a divorce and granting of sole custody of a child, police believe a DeSoto woman was shot and killed by her ex-husband Tuesday night.
The divorce between Catina Murphy and Andre Murphy was finalized in the last week of February. Yesterday Andre, a former school security guard, shot and killed his ex-wife before turning the gun on himself.
Catina Murphy, 37, had moved into her mother's DeSoto home and was there on Wednesday night when Andre Murphy broke in. Sources told CBS 11 News that Catina was on the phone with 911 when her ex-husband started shooting. In the disturbing call, Catina tells dispatchers that her ex-husband was breaking down the door and that police needed to hurry.
Neighbors say the details of the murder-suicide are heartbreaking. "We're like a family on this street for this to happen in baffled. I can't describe I haven't slept. Just knowing we lost two people who lived on this street who were like family to us, it's very disturbing," said Charmayne Price.
Andre Murphy's career included years in law enforcement. He was a peace officer with the Arlington Police Department from 2001 until 2002. The 40-year-old had worked as an officer with the Cedar Hill Independent School District for nearly four years, but that employment ended last May.
In September of 2012, Catina Murphy claimed her husband had assaulted her and later filed for a retraining order. Despite the reports of violence and then ongoing divorce proceedings, a family friend told CBS 11 Catina had complained that Andre was stalking her in an effort to reconcile.
The final divorce decree included granting Catina sole custody of the couple's 7-year-old daughter. The child is not believed to have been at the house when the shootings happened.
Investigators are still trying to determine exactly what led to the alleged murder-suicide. The exact manner of death will be determined through autopsy performed by the Dallas County Medical Examiner.
