ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Police in Arlington have arrested a 20-year-old suspect in the brutal murder of an 18-year-old high school student. Carl Wilson was gunned down and left for dead outside of a car wash along Treepoint Drive in Kennedale last month.
Devin Holland was taken into custody at his Arlington residence at about 1:30 a.m. on Thursday morning. The suspect is now behind bars in Mansfield for Wilson's murder. His bond has not yet been set.
Police said that "cell phone records, social media feeds, forensic evidence and witness interviews" led them to Holland. The suspect also has ties to a Tarrant County gang, authorities added, but could not confirm if that played a role in the alleged murder.
Holland was also arrested just last week in Arlington on unrelated drugs and weapons charges. He posted bail and was released from custody.
Wilson was a father and respected football player at James Martin High School in Arlington. Authorities stated that the attack stemmed from an argument at the campus. Wilson's friends called it a cowardly end to that confrontation.
"The victim had an altercation earlier in the day at school," explained Chief Tommy Williams with the Kennedale Police Department on Thursday, "and apparently our suspect was acquainted with the other student and, for whatever reason, decided to insert himself into this disagreement."
Outsiders reportedly got involved in the fight, police explained, and 15 to 20 people were in the area where Wilson was gunned down. "I'm still in shock," said friend and teammate Christian Levy shortly after the murder. "Still can't believe it."
Just before the shooting, Wilson had visited Kilgore College, and planned to continue playing football after graduating from high school. "Everybody loved Carl," Levy added. "I don't know nobody that had something bad to say about Carl. Nothing you could say."
The victim's family has set up a Carl Wilson Jr. Memorial Fund at Affiliated Bank, located at 2326 West Pleasant Ridge Road in Arlington.
