ARLINGTON (AP) - Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was just a bit wide of the plate.

Alito threw the ceremonial first pitch before the Texas Rangers' home game against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday night. His throw went well right of the plate, but Rangers assistant coach Gary Pettis came out of a crouch and reached out to catch it in the air.

Wearing a Rangers jersey with his name and the No. 1 on the back, Alito sat in the front row of seats near where former President George W. Bush sits when he attends several games a season. Alito has served on the nation's highest court since 2006 after being nominated by Bush.

Bush, once part of the Rangers ownership, wasn't at Wednesday night's game.
