Super Saturday Tops Black Friday as Biggest Shopping Day

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - With last minute shoppers checking off their lists, the Saturday before Christmas is predicted to dethrone Black Friday as the busiest shopping day of the year for the first time in a decade.
According to ShopperTrak, retailers will pull in as estimated $10-billion in sales on what is referred to as Super Saturday.
The year Black Friday netted $9.1-billion in sales, according the ShopperTrak.
Analysts say a strong job market and low gas prices have led to more last minute buying.
At the Walmart at the Timber Creek Crossing shopping center in Dallas, manager Paul Strunc said more cash registers were open this year to accommodate the large crowds.
He said keeping lines at a minimum is key when competing with conveniences of online shopping.
At the JCPenny at Timber Creek Crossing on Saturday, the check-out line at times stretch 30-40 deep with all the registers opened.
JCPenny stayed opened until midnight to accommodate shoppers, while Toys R Us extended its hours to 2:00am.
With eight grandkids and eight wish lists, Bonnie and Bill Lavielle said they've made it a family tradition to wait until the final Saturday before Christmas to do their shopping.
The Garland grandparents said they crowds at the stores have never been a deterrent.
"In fact, if we do it early we would miss the fun of doing it at the last minute," said Bonnie Lavielle. "So I like doing it at the last minutes."
