Super Bowl XLV: The Forgotten Game?
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - This may be the first time in a long time that the Super Bowl is taking a backseat in news coverage in its host city. Although, if you ask anyone involved in the big game, they'll tell you it's not being pushed off the front page.
ESPN played to a warm crowd at Sundance Square, although the cold weather appears to have put the Super Bowl on the back burner for now. Michelle Beadle, co-host of ESPN's Sports Nation, said, "It kind of seems to be what we're all talking about. But all of us live up north. It's not that bad. It's just, we weren't expecting it."
The cold weather didn't stop Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Jay Ratliff from stopping by Sundance Square. "I don't know if the weather put it on the back burner, but it definitely slowed it down a little."
Despite the crowd for the ESPN broadcast, Main Street in downtown Fort Worth was practically deserted.
Atlanta looked a lot worse in January of 2000, when an unpredicted ice storm greeted fans for Super Bowl XXXIV. The game hasn't been back since. Could that happen to North Texas?
Pittsburgh Steelers fan Amy Stancovern said, "I don't think so at all. Because they're going to Indianapolis soon and New York soon. I mean, it's Dallas. It's Jerry World."
The NFL isn't worried. Their spokesperson, Brian McCarthy, said, "Here in North Texas, we're lucky the storm came early. We're paying close attention to the weather. I think we'll be all set for the rest of the week."
Fans don't seem to mind either. Green Bay Packers fan Tom McElroy said, "Hey, we love it. It's like being in the backyard."
"This is nothing compared to back home and what I'm used to," a man calling himself Rodney 'The Hulk' told CBS 11 News.
How it all will go on game day? We just don't know. We only know on this day, Myrtle the Fort Worth Zoo opossum picked the Packers for the win.
