Study: Women More Impacted By Poverty In Texas
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A study conducted by the Center for Public Policy Priorities for the Texas Women's Foundation and Dallas Women's Foundation found the average Texas woman lives in a city, is younger than 35 and is a woman of color. She is also 1.2 percent more likely to live in poverty than a man, and generally makes $9,158 less per year than her male counterpart.
"We have a wage gap in Texas because in many ways I think women are the majority of the low wage earners in the state, 63 percent of our folks that are making minimum wage or lower - are women," said Roslyn Dawson Thompson, president and CEO of Dallas Women's Foundation.
The CPPP said they hope the study will help define areas where investment is needed. Jobs and education are two areas they had in mind.
The group developed the report by highlighting the differences and similarities across nine metro areas in the state, including Dallas and Fort Worth.
