Students Sending Letters To Legislators Over Cuts

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - They may be small, but school children have big voices.  On Thursday students across Dallas wrote letters to legislators in Austin, asking them to save their schools.

"Dear Gov. Rick Perry, I heard you are thinking about cutting funds for education. Please do not do this," wrote Aaron, a second grader.  "My teachers do a good job and I learn a lot everyday."

"Dear Rick Perry, please don't change our schools," wrote Elizabeth, a fourth grader. "We love our schools just the way they are.  We really don't want bigger classes so our teachers have to struggle having so many people in one class."

A PTA in the Dallas Independent School District organized a letter-writing campaign.  While the kids were told where to send the letters, the words and thoughts are their own.

"This all just came out of him. I was busy that day and we barely even talked about what to write. He did this himself," said Karen, a parent.

The students may not understand all of the details of the budgets shortfall, but they do realize how it could impact their education.

"Please make sure we have enough money for the teachers," said Lillie, a first grader.

"We can't do anything without our education," said Zoe, a fifth grader.
