Students Execute Tornado Drill Procedures, But This Time It's Not A Drill
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Tornado drills are a right of passage for children in North Texas. As storms moved across the metroplex Tuesday afternoon, thousands of school kids began executing their tornado drill procedures...only this time it wasn't a drill.
As tornadoes moved through the area, the Arlington Independent School District put every school into "shelter in place" or lockdown mode.
Leslie Johnston, Communications Coordinator for the district, explained that it's important to let students know what's happening.
"We want to be as up front as possible while still remaining calm for our students and ensuring them that everything is going to be okay," she said.
Johnston said during the storms schools took every precaution.
"We always want to make sure our kids are as safe and secure as possible, so we want to take these situations very seriously."
Arlington ISD officials report that there were no significant problems on any of their 73 campuses.
"We did not sustain any damage yesterday during the storms," declared Johnston. "The last of the power was restored overnight so we're resuming a normal schedule today."
There are some 64,000 students in the Arlington ISD.
