9 Students, Driver Taken To Hospital After School Bus Overturns Off Dallas Highway
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A Bishop Dunne Catholic School bus ended up on its side down an embankment off I-30 near Loop 12 in Dallas Thursday afternoon.
This happened on the westbound side of I-30.
Ten students were on the bus. Nine students and the bus driver were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
By Thursday night, all the students had been discharged from the hospitals.
The bus driver remained hospitalized for tests and observation.
The one student who was not injured was released to the student's parents.
"Please keep the students and driver in your prayers," the Diocese of Dallas said in a statement.
According to Dallas Fire-Rescue as many as four vehicles were involved in the crash.
Thursday evening, students thanked the people who helped them.
"A car hit us and we started to cross three lanes and a bus driver tried to save the bus from flipping or skidding off the side the road but unfortunately, going into the shoulder and and the bus did flip," said student Pierce Weller.
The high school sophomore says once the bus was on its side, students went flying since there are no seat belts in the bus.
"It almost felt unreal, like I couldn't believe that it was happening," said Weller. "And looking around out there, where we crashed, seeing blood everywhere, my friends' faces... everybody shocked and crying... broke my heart."
Drivers pulled over to help the students out, opening up the rear door of the bus.
"They're grateful. It could have been a lot worse," said Bishop Edward Burns of the Diocese of Dallas.
The bus driver was being credited for keeping children safe, even as three other cars crashed around them.
"God sent some angels to watch over these kids," said Bishop Burns.
An all-school assembly and prayer service will be held in the morning to pray for the students and driver involved in the crash as they recover from their injuries, the Diocese said Thursday night.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation by Dallas Police.
None of the passengers from the other cars were taken to the hospital.
