Student Shot, Killed Outside Houston-Area Bellaire High School, Suspect In Custody
HOUSTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Police in Bellaire, in the Houston area, are investigating after a student was shot outside of Bellaire High School around 4:00 p.m. Tuesday.
The student died at the hospital a short time later, Houston ISD.
HISD released a statement on the deadly shooting:
"The Houston Independent School District is deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of one of our students. We offer our deepest sympathies to the student's family and friends. This incident is being investigated by the Bellaire Police Department. HISD is fully cooperating in the investigation. In this time of sadness and loss, I want to assure you that we will have grief and crisis counselors available on campus tomorrow and as long as needed to offer our students and staff emotional support. We will also have extra officers on campus and patrols around the campus in addition to extra administrative personnel to ensure the school is safe and secure."
HISD later decided to cancel classes for Wednesday, January 15.
Shortly after the shooting, city of Bellaire tweeted, "There has been a shooting at Bellaire High School. The suspect is still at large. Please avoid the area and/or remain in your home until you receive further information from the City of Bellaire."
Police said around 8:00 p.m. they had a suspect in custody along with a second person involved in the case.
Neither the victim nor the suspect had been identified as of late Tuesday night.
It's not clear whether or not the suspect was a student.
