Storms, With Heavy Rain & High Winds, Cause Dallas County Damage
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) — A strong storm system has drenched North Texas with more than 5 inches of rain in some areas and triggered flash flooding.
Heavy rains and high winds caused damage to homes and businesses across Dallas County.
Rain caused flash flooding and high winds sent debris flying -- damaging roofs and breaking out windows.
As storms passed over Dallas a window was shattered on the 12th floor of the CBS Radio building, off of Central Expressway and Fitzhue.
A Flash Flood warning has been issued for Dallas County until 6:15 p.m.
Students in the Highland Park ISD and a number of Dallas Independent School District schools sheltered in place until the most severe storms passed.
Steve Mace, the Community Information Officer with the City of University Park, said storms moved into their area quickly. Tonado sirens were sounded there just after 3:30 p.m. and there was a torrential downpour for about 20 minutes.
"We have some street flooding. We are starting to put out some barricades," Mace explained. "We have had a few reports of trees down, a few other reports of power lines down. But for the most part we have avoided anything really damaging and serious."

Kris Spears with Oncor talked live on CBS 11 News and said there are some 39,000 without power. Most of those outages are centered in eastern and southeastern Dallas County. Crews are out working to restore power. By 8:45 p.m. that number had been reduced to about 20,000.
"Outages that are caused by downed trees are in and of themselves…take a little longer to restore," he said. " We have to first go out safely remove tree limbs and entire trees that have fallen on equipment before we can assess the damage and go in and make that repair."
Downed tree limbs in the southbound lanes of the Dallas North Tollway at Mockingbird Lane have blocked two lanes of traffic. Maintenance crews are working to remove the debris.
Police in Cockrell Hill say a possible funnel passed through their city around 3:30 p.m.
There are also reports that a possible lightning strike caused a 2-alarm house fire in Kennedale.
