Storms Cause Major Damage At Dallas Church, Again
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - High winds caused damage in west Dallas. A church off Westmoreland, near Canada Drive, had the exterior wall of the building blown away.
The CBS 11 Radar indicted winds as high as 80 mph in some places, as the storms came through.
The New Beginnings Covenant Ministries sustained pretty extensive damage. Pictures from the outside show a wall collapsed on the ground. Bricks, wood and glass lay strewn on the lawn of the church. Inside the building, equipment was damaged and areas flooded.
Pastor Vincent Young said the damage included, "All of our computers and our sound equipment, carpet, [tiles and sheet rock] from the ceiling that's fallen in."
Church member Mary Young told CBS 11's Jack Fink, "It's just a blessing that none of us was here at the time that it happened."
Unfortunately New Beginnings is no stranger to storm damage. Young said the church, "…got hit a few years back. It messed up the roof and knocked out the windows… but this is the worse.
It was just three years ago when the church had to spend more than $15,000 repairing damage from a tornado.
Looking up and down Canada Street it seemed like nearly every home had some type of damage. Sheds were blown away, shingles from roofs were strewn about streets and yards, and trees and limbs were down.
So far, there have been no reports of injuries.
Mary Young is thankful everyone in the area is safe and put the day's events in context.
"It's real saddening to see something like this happen to your church, but we are blessed that no one was here and thankful to God that we are still alive. This can be repaired again."
