DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Police are investigating after a stolen Dallas Fire-Rescue ambulance crashed into a warehouse early Tuesday morning. The incident took place at around 6:00 a.m. along Plantation Road, close to the intersection of Harry Hines Boulevard and West Mockingbird Lane.

Authorities originally received reports about a person bleeding in the area. When officers arrived, they found that injured man acting erratically. Emergency responders placed the man into the back of the ambulance in order to transport him to a nearby hospital.

However, while the paramedics were outside of the vehicle, the suspect jumped out from the back of the ambulance and ran to the driver's seat. He started to speed off, but crashed a short distance away, into a warehouse belonging to Dallas Foundation Drilling.

The suspect then tried to take another vehicle, police said, this time from a nearby Southern Botanical landscaping building. A group of workers saw the man approaching and quickly grabbed the vehicle's keys. When the suspect entered the truck, those workers held the door shut until officers could arrive.

The suspected thief was eventually taken to the hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening. Police do not know how he was injured in the first place, but believe that he might have some sort of mental disability. The man faces charges for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. His name has not been released.

Nobody else was inside of the emergency vehicle when the crash took place. No paramedics or firefighters were injured during this incident. But the Dallas Fire-Rescue ambulance was totaled. It was only two years old.
