Stephen Jones: Cowboys QB Romo Will Be Ready For Training Camp
DALLAS, Texas (105.3 THE FAN) - The Dallas Cowboys hope they are done answering questions about the lightning-rod quarterback they don't have (Johnny Manziel) and hope they will soon answer all the questions regarding the lightning-rod quarterback they do employ (Tony Romo).
"Yes, (Romo will be ready for the 2014 season) and he's actually progressing great," Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said during a conference call with season-ticket holders on Tuesday. "He's on schedule if not ahead of schedule. He's throwing the ball around, we not only think he'll be ready for opening week, he'll start up at training camp and be ready to go."
Romo is working his way through rehab from season-ending discectomy surgery. He is participating in a very limited basis in work right now at Valley Ranch and will continue to be limited in upcoming minicamps.
In all public comments the team reiterates its belief Romo will be cleared for the start of training camp in July in Oxnard, Calif., and be ready for the season-opener against the 49ers at AT&T Stadium on Sept. 7.
In the conference call, the subject of Dallas' decision to pass on drafting Texas A&M star Manziel was also broached.
"We all feel Johnny Manziel is a great football player," Jones said. "(But) we've got a great quarterback in Tony Romo, who I think is ready to take the next big step. Get him hot and get us in the playoffs and anything can happen."
