Staubach Defends Romo, Predicts Breakthrough Season
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) -- He may be biased towards the Dallas Cowboys, but when Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach talks -- people listen.
Staubach spoke to reporters at the Cowboys Blue and Silver Debut at AT&T Stadium on Thursday.
The two-time Super Bowl Champion and Heisman Trophy winner expressed his confidence in the 2013 Cowboys -- particularly in quarterback Tony Romo.
"If there's a bigger [Tony] Romo fan in Dallas, I don't know who it is," said Staubach. "I want to argue with all of my negative Romo fans and just let them know and tell them how great this guys is."
Staubach, who earned the nickname "Roger the Dodger" in his day, highlighted Romo's instincts, play-making ability and evasiveness in the pocket as his greatest assets.
While Romo has surpassed Staubach in nearly every statistical category, few believe that Romo is the more distinguished quarterback. But Staubach believes his success as a quarterback was due in large part to the pieces around him.
"It's a team effort too," said Staubach. "I can't take credit for those great teams I had. It was because I had a running game, a good offensive line -- a lot of things working for me."
Does Romo have the same talent around him?
"[Romo] needs some help up front at times. The running game has got to be better than 30th or 31st in the league."
Staubach pointed to last season's week 8, 29-24 loss to the New York Giants as evidence that the Cowboys are close. Dez Bryant appeared to reel in a miracle touchdown catch with under a minute to play, but a review revealed that his fingers were out of bounds.
Last season's team, according to Staubach, could have easily been 10-6.
"They're a good team that needs to get to a higher level, and I think this could be the year to do it."
