State's Annual Tax-Free Weekend Arrives
ALLEN (CBSDFW.COM) - Expect to see big crowds of shoppers at malls and clothing stores this weekend across North Texas. The state will not be collecting sales tax on a lot of items Friday through Sunday, as part of the annual tax-free holiday. If previous years are any indication, this year is guaranteed to be another three days of shopping madness.
There is a lot of competition for your dollars this weekend. Retailers always take advantage of the tax-free holiday by rolling out some of the biggest and best sales. And the new Paragon Outlet Mall has opened for business in Grand Prairie, just in time for shoppers to pour in for the deals.
But the exemption only applies for certain items -- clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks under $100. There are even restrictions within these groups. Special clothes or shoes that are primarily for athletics activity or protective use -- such as golf cleats or football pads -- will not be part of the tax-free deal. Nor will jewelry, purses or luggage. Click here for a full list of what is and is not included.
School supplies are often a hot seller over the tax-free weekend, especially for parents with multiple children. All of those pencils and notebooks can really add up, so the extra discounts are a big help. But be warned, school supplies tend to sell out quickly.
It is easy to get caught up in the excitement of the tax-free holiday, and that can lead to overspending. The best advice is to plan a budget before you head out to the stores. Do not buy more than you can afford -- either for your kids or for yourself -- and follow that plan.
