Stars Training Camp Comes To Fort Worth
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The Dallas Stars are heating up for another new season. The team's training camp begins Thursday and, for the first time, it will be held in Fort Worth. But before getting started, some Stars alumni members worked with kids as part of the Fit Worth health program.
The former players were at Morningside Elementary School in Fort Worth on Wednesday to teach children how to play street hockey. Just as a new hockey season begins, so does another school year where students will commit to leading healthier lives. According to a 2011 survey, half of all Fort Worth Independent School District students are obese.
This will be the second year of the Fit Worth program. Students are challenged to do things like eat healthier and be more active, and those successful schools have a chance to win $1,000 toward new gym equipment for physical education classes.
Events like the one at Morningside Elementary School act as a pep rally -- for the students, the City of Fort Worth, and the Dallas Stars. Plus, the team donated street hockey equipment to the school to help get kids excited about hockey, both on and off the ice.
"They may be the Dallas Stars, but people in Fort Worth follow them," said Mayor Betsy Price. "They're really involved in the Metroplex, so it is great for them to come to Fort Worth and give people who don't always drive to Dallas a chance, an opportunity to see them."
The Stars training camp begins Thursday at the Fort Worth Convention Center. Anyone is free to come watch from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, as well as a scrimmage match among team members from 10:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
