DALLAS (CBS11 SPORTS) - Stars Forward Vern Fiddler is up for the award given to the NHL player who does the most to help his community.

What he does every home game, hosting people affected by Leukemia/Lymphoma, is a perfect testament as to why.

Recently, Fiddler hosted 9-year-old Hamilton Grant and his family.

Hamilton was diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of three, and went through four years of chemotherapy.

His parents, Meiko and Frank, are proud to say Hamilton is currently cancer-free.

In Meiko's words, "what doesn't kill you will make you stronger, and our family has grown stronger."

Hamilton says he is so excited that he doesn't have to have spinal taps any longer. While Hamilton hasn't been able to participate in competitive sports, the family hopes that changes soon. In fact,

they have signed Hamilton up for an upcoming Stars youth hockey program.

Upon meeting Fiddler, Hamilton said he wants to play goalie. If Hamilton can stop a deadly disease, he can certainly stop a puck. Fiddler told Hamilton to keep his spirits up and keep battling, because he knows all too well, the type of support that's needed in this fight.

Fiddler's sister died from Leukemia when she was 8 years old, and he says anything he can do to help others win the battle, is something he will always be passionate about.
