Stabbed Officer's Girlfriend Provides Update
GRAPEVINE (CBSDFW.COM) - The Miami-Dade County police detective who was stabbed by a prisoner in North Texas could be heading back home soon. The Florida inmate escaped in Grapevine, leading police on a week-long manhunt. Alberto Morales then quickly became one the of most wanted fugitives in Texas.
Officers finally caught up with 42-year-old Morales early Saturday morning after getting a tip about a robbery from a resident near Lake Grapevine. Police descended on the area, found Morales and attempted to take him into custody. But Morales was ultimately shot and killed.
Jaime Pardinas was helping transport the prisoner from Florida to Nevada. According to investigators, Morales used his eyeglasses to stab Pardinas several times while his partner was inside of a Walmart store. Pardinas was taken to Parkland Hospital in Dallas and had been recovering from his injuries while the manhunt was taking place.
Pardinas had planned to speak with CBS 11 News on Monday morning, but that plan changed. Instead, the officer's girlfriend provided an update on his condition. "He's doing well. He's recovering day-by-day. He's getting a little bit better. The injuries are slowly -- he's slowly recovering from his injuries. But he's been up and about, he's been eating, he's been talking and cracking a little bit of jokes," said girlfriend Marinka Stuvel. "He's doing wonderful."
Stuvel said that the couple could return to Florida as soon as Tuesday, and that Pardinas does plan to return to his job back home.
