Squad Car Fire Closes North Texas Interstate

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Monday afternoon a Fort Worth Police Department squad car sat charred in the middle of Interstate-20.

An officer was performing a traffic stop near Hulen and was inside his car.

Meanwhile another vehicle, a van, traveling on the highway somehow rear-ended the squad car. The impact of the collision was so forceful that the squad car became airborne and when it slammed back to the ground burst into flames.

In a matter of minutes flames engulfed the squad car and charred it beyond recognition.

The police officer isn't believed to have serious injuries, but was taken to an area hospital to be evaluated.

While initially starting off on the side of the road, the squad car ended up in the middle of the highway. Subsequently I-20 westbound was temporarily closed at Hulen. All lanes were reopened and traffic was moving by the peak of rush hour.
