Spirit Continues Expansion At DFW Airport
DALLAS (CBS NEWS) — Spirit Airlines, which combines cheap fares with more fees than competitors charge, plans to expand again at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport -- the hometown airport of American Airlines.
Spiit also plans to serve the nation's capital from Baltimore-Washington International Airport and to leave Washington's Reagan National Airport in September.
Spirit said Tuesday that it will add daily nonstop flights between DFW Airport and Baltimore and Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport in September. It will start flights to Los Angeles and Oakland, Calif., next April. Spirit is seeking government approval for flights to Cancun, Mexico, as well.
All of that would push Spirit to 20 destinations from DFW, where it began service just over a year ago. Dallas will be the airline's second-largest operation behind Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
American and its American Eagle control about 85 percent of the flights at DFW, which is one of American's five "cornerstone" hub airports in the U.S.
American, Eagle and parent, AMR Corp., are operating under bankruptcy protection. AMR has lost more than $10 billion since 2001. Spirit says its expansion at DFW has nothing to do with American's problems.
