Southwest Airlines To Start Flights In Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Southwest Airlines Co. says it will begin flights from Des Moines later this year.

The Dallas-based discount airline says Monday that it will transition its AirTran operations to a Southwest operation with Southwest assuming all flights. Southwest will operate two roundtrip flights between Des Moines and Chicago's Midway International Airport beginning Sept. 30.

Southwest bought AirTran last year. In January, it announced it would keep flying to 22 cities served by AirTran but would end flights to six others as it combines the two airlines.
