Southwest Airlines To Fly Between Atlanta & Los Angeles
DALLAS (AP) - Southwest Airlines, which plans to start service to Atlanta next month, said Wednesday that it will add a daily nonstop round trip from that city to Los Angeles beginning in June.
Atlanta is the biggest U.S. city that Southwest doesn't serve, but the airline gained a toehold when it bought AirTran Airways in May, setting up direct competition with Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines Inc.
Southwest said it would begin flying June 10 between Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport.
The Dallas-based airline had already announced plans to operate 15 daily nonstop flights between Dallas and Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, Houston and Austin, Texas, beginning Feb. 12. In March, it plans to add daily flights to Las Vegas and Phoenix.
AirTran flies to 52 cities from Atlanta, including three daily flights to Los Angeles.
Shares of Southwest Airlines Co. rose 3 cents to $8.74 in afternoon trading.
