South Dallas Economic Expansion Beginning With New Walmart
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Shopping in your own neighborhood. For many North Texans, it's a retail reality.
But homeowners and residents from wide swaths of southern Dallas have complained for years about being forced eat, shop and bank miles away.
But the start of a new business development is being hailed as an end to that status.
The Glen Oaks neighborhood of Oak Cliff is the center of the development plans. 250,000 people live in the area.
Currently there is no Walmart, no Home Depot, Starbucks or Chili's.
Residents say those places should be here. And now, one is coming.
City leaders, including Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, and developers broke ground on something thousands of other U.S. communities have, a Walmart.
The building of the retail center is really about breaking the barrier of development and reinvestment in this part of Dallas.
It's part of the city's "Grow South" campaign. Developer Frank Milhalopoulos says the city is serious about the economic expansion. "The opportunity here is the future of Dallas, and how it can grow."
In Southwest Dallas, along I-30 and Cockrell Hill, you have the Pinnacle Park Development.
Head further south to Wheatland and 67, you'll find shopping and dining choices.
The leaders of this neighborhood say finally, they'll have the same in their community.
"This is an opportunity to begin the revitalizing process that we've been hearing about for so many years," said Carolyn Arnold with the Glen Oaks Neighborhood Association.
The retail center is being built along I-35E and Ledbetter. It is being touted as the first in a series of long-awaited developments in a part of Oak Cliff absent of new retail.
