Sources: Dallas Cowboys To Develop First Of Its Kind Entertainment District In Frisco
FRISCO (CBS 11 NEWS) – The Dallas Cowboys may be moving more than just its headquarters and practice facility to Frisco. While no one will go on the record to confirm the move for the football club, sources tell CBS 11 the development will be a massive entertainment district with an indoor stadium that could also be used for concerts.
Monday afternoon, the first of four government agencies in Frisco will vote on whether to give incentives to the Dallas Cowboys to move their headquarters and practice facility here.
Already a tent is set up in an empty 90-acre lot at Warren Parkway and the Dallas North Tollway for a major announcement Tuesday morning.
CBS 11 has learned the proposed Frisco plan would become the first entertainment district in the nation to be centered around an NFL team, with a luxury resort hotel, offices, shops, apartments, restaurants, and an indoor stadium not only for the Cowboys, but for Frisco ISD as well. It will also be a place for concerts and other big events.
At a meeting this morning, Frisco Mayor Maher Maso could barely contain himself.
"I think the city council should evaluate it. That's why it's on the agenda tonight. That's what they'll be doing, that's what the community and economic development corporations will be looking at, and the school board will also, and it will be inappropriate for me to comment on it."
Frisco is already home to the FC Dallas soccer team, the Roughriders baseball farm team for the Texas Rangers, and the Dallas Stars practice facility.
At the 3rd Base sports bar, they call the potential move a homerun and touchdown all the same.
"Frisco is a sports town. A lot of sports clubs are located up here. We're a sports bar. It's great for business, great for the whole area," said general manager Robert Verich.
The Community Development Corporation will consider the deal Monday afternoon, followed by the city council.
A sports marketing expert told CBS 11's Jack Fink besides any tax incentives, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is also hoping to attract more season ticket holders from growing Collin County area.
The Dallas Cowboys declined comment. The last time the team moved was in the mid-1980s, from Dallas to the current Valley Ranch home in Irving.
