Sony Pictures Pulls Plug on 'The Interview'

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - After several theaters in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and across the country refused to show Seth Rogan's new comedy "The Interview," Sony Pictures announced on Wednesday it was pulling the plug on the movie all together.
Anonymous hackers believed to be from North Korea made several threats about harming moviegoers who watched the movie. "The Interview" mocks North Korea and is a fictional story about journalists killing the leader of the country, Kim Jong Un.
"I think it's bogus. I think it's ridiculous," said Alex Bailey, a Mesquite resident attending a movie at the Angelika Film Center on Wednesday night.
Bailey and his girlfriend Brittany Wier planned to eventually see the movie and worry the decision by Sony Pictures could set a precedent.
"It's kind of scary. It puts some credibility to it," said Wier.
Moviegoer Cindy Eichenholz said she understands the decision because the threats made her not want to see the movie. She does not understand why Sony Pictures even made the movie in the first place.
"If someone said lets make a movie about assassinating Obama, not that we would do those kind of things. But would Americans like that? Probably not," said Eichenholz.
Sony Pictures releases a statement on Wednesday.
"We are deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie, and in the process do damage to our company, our employees, and the American public. We stand by our filmmakers and their right to free expression and are extremely disappointed by this outcome."
Mike Orosz, a terrorism expert and professor at the University of Southern California, said he does not agree with the decision.
"I think we should be aware, not afraid. No. if we're afraid, they've won," said Orosz. "I think all you're doing is setting an example to others."
Sony Pictures has not announced what it will do with the Film.
The Alamo Draft House in Dallas said it will be playing "Team America" instead of "The Interview." The showing is free.
