Some Fort Worth Schools Had No Power Yet Still Had Classes

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM ) - 15 Fort Worth ISD schools had only partial power or none at all - yet still had classes.

That surprised parents like Raymond Medina.  "The power's been out since 4 o'clock yesterday, so I don't know why they didn't cancel classes. The buses ran this morning, they dropped them off knowing there was no power.  I don't know, kind of crazy."

The district brought generators to the schools that had no electricity.

Still, we saw parents picking up students early from Eastern Hills High School.

Medina's son Raymond is one of them.  "Everything's working. They've got some extra back-up lights for people to see. First, it was dark though."

Parents like Phyllis Frederick may have been surprised‎, but many didn't mind.  "Yes, but I'm glad they did. Kids need to learn regardless of what's going on."

District‎ spokesman Clint Bond says they opened schools for safety reasons.  "Maybe the safest place for those kids to be was to be in school. We have full-time staff in the schools. They're going to be there all day."

Second-grader Donovan Banks says he had a good day, and that made his mom happy.

"I think they did a good job."

The district brought in breakfast and lunch to affected campuses because the kitchen staff there couldn't cook Friday.

Bond says most of the district's 140 campuses had no weather-related problems.

He says they're hoping power will be restored at all schools by Monday morning.
