SMU Sells Beer For The First Time At Home Game

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM)  - Despite the 58-6 blowout loss to Texas A&M Saturday, some Southern Methodist University fans said they now are more likely to attend a game at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.

"Beer sales is a big drive for me," said SMU fan Adam Gourley.

Gourley, who graduated last year from SMU, said he never went to football games when he was a student.

But now instead of watching college football at a bar with his friends, he's more apt to grab a beer and watch the game at the stadium.

SMU on Saturday became the 21St university to sell beer and wine at a football game on campus.

It's been a growing trend in the past five years.

The private Dallas school sold alcohol for the first time last year at its basketball games.

For schools outside the power five conferences that don't benefit from the major television contracts, like SMU, additional revenue from alcohol sales can have a major impact.

Leslie Coyne, a mother of a current SMU student, purchased water instead of a beer at Saturday's game.  She said she's not against the sale of alcohol, but added there needs to be a limit.

"I don't want to be around a bunch of drunks when I leave the parking lot," said Coyne. "But I'm not against it.  If they don't get beer here, they get it somewhere else."

At a time when there's concern about binge drinking on campuses, organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving oppose alcohol sales at college games.

But at least on this Saturday, most fans said it wasn't the drinking; only the score that got out of hand.
