DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A week after his body was located, SMU police officer Mark McCullers was buried on Monday in Dallas. McCullers vanished in early July when his car was swept away by a rain-swelled Turtle Creek, which was raging with dangerous floodwaters.

The Marine and father to six children was working a private security job at a construction site in the area when strong storms moved through North Texas. Flash flooding brought the creek's water level up above bridges. Surveillance video showed water taking away the vehicle that McCullers was driving, but he appeared to have gotten out of the car first.

While the car was found in the creek quickly, McCullers himself was not accounted for until last week, when his remains were found along the Trinity River.

McCullers was bured on Monday afternoon at DFW National Cemetery with full military honors. Prior to that, his friends and family held a final memorial service. "I'm thankful, because they never gave up and all the searchers stayed so dedicated, and they brought him home," the officer's wife said. "That's the most important thing, because he deserves to be home."
